Solana Meme Coin Trading: BONK Treasury Drained in $20M Attack

BONK drops after BonkDAO's governance system was hijacked in a roughly 20 million dollar treasury drain, prompting exchange…

BONK, the dog themed meme coin built on Solana, is sliding after its governing organization, BonkDAO, suffered what the project itself is calling a malicious governance attack, draining roughly 20 million dollars worth of tokens from its treasury. The token trades around 0.0, down 10.2 percent on the day, extending losses tied to the exploit and rattling anyone watching solana meme coin trading for signs of stress.

How the Treasury Was Drained

Around 4:00 a.m. ET on Monday, more than 4.4 trillion BONK tokens, worth about 19.3 million dollars at the time, moved out of the BonkDAO treasury wallet to an address ending in JHvQ. The transfer was buried inside Bonk Improvement Proposal 76, a governance measure titled Sowellian BonkDAO that promised to install new leadership, reorganize holdings, and reward yes voters with BONK tokens. That reward never materialized. Instead, the tokens sitting in the JHvQ wallet, which Solana explorer Solscan traced to funding from a Bybit account, were shifted again around 3:30 p.m. ET to a separate address ending in eh42, with no distribution to voters or anyone else.

Exchanges React While Investigators Trace the Funds

BonkDAO says it has identified the exchange wallets used to buy up BONK ahead of the proposal vote and has looped in law enforcement, network bridges, and the Solana Foundation as it tries to claw back funds. South Korean exchange Upbit and U.S. based Kraken responded by freezing BONK deposits and withdrawals, with Upbit pointing to user protection measures tied to the security incident. Those pauses limit how easily the drained tokens, or anything tied to them, can be cashed out or moved further, even as the perpetrators appear to be shuffling assets between wallets.

A Steep Fall From Meme Coin Stardom

BONK once ranked among the top 100 cryptocurrencies by market capitalization, riding the wave of Solana ecosystem enthusiasm that lifted dozens of dog and animal themed tokens in 2023 and 2024. It has since fallen roughly 93 percent from its all time high of 0.000058 dollars, and the governance attack has only added fresh pressure. Meme coins carry no underlying cash flow or product to anchor their value, so incidents like this, where a supposedly community run governance process gets hijacked to move treasury funds, tend to hit sentiment hard. Prices for tokens like BONK can swing violently within hours, and this episode is a reminder that decentralized governance structures remain a real attack surface even for established, widely traded projects.
