Coinbase Global (NASDAQ:COIN) stock jumped 11.3% in a single afternoon session after the company joined Visa, Mastercard and more than 140 other firms in launching a new dollar backed stablecoin called Open USD, or OUSD, through a coalition named Open Standard.

What the OUSD Partnership Actually Does

Stablecoins are digital tokens built to hold a steady value, usually by pegging themselves to the dollar. OUSD promises zero fee minting and redemption, and it plans to split reserve income among the partner companies rather than keeping it concentrated with a single issuer. That structure spans the payments, banking and technology industries, and analysts largely called it a net positive for Coinbase's standing in the alliance. There is a wrinkle, though: OUSD could end up competing with USDC, the stablecoin Coinbase already helped build and profits from.

Adding fuel to the rally, filings showed Ark Invest bought $44 million worth of Coinbase shares in June, a signal that at least one prominent institutional investor was adding to its position heading into the announcement.
